What’s been said about giving a ‘Second Chance’

In 2015 Winning Teams implemented a Second Chance Programme at public Adult Education &Training Centres in Gauteng. This was in response to a request by the management of these two Centres to provide support to teachers and learners who register at AET Centres to rewrite/upgrade their National Senior Certificate Mathematics and Physical Science examinations.

Due to a lack of financial support these Centres are unable to provide the teacher and learner support needed to give learners a real second chance. Sadly 70-80% of learners fail again. Winning Teams is thrilled to announce that the implemented programme was highly successful.

Comment from a Teacher:

“As a Centre we look back on our relationship with Winning Teams. It has been highly successful for both teachers and learners. The improvement in the 2015 NSC Results compared to 2014 is huge in both Mathematics and Physical Science. The improvements in results are:

Physical Science from a % pass rate of 20 to 40%, an improvement in the pass rate of 20%.

Mathematics from % pass rate of 20% to 37%, an improvement of 17%.

Learners on the Winning Teams programme performed much better than those NOT on the programme by as much as 38%.

These improved pass rates clearly show the contribution made by Winning Teams.

Improvement was not only visible for learners who perform above average but also for those below average.

We really appreciate this continued partnership that has impacted the lives of so many learners”

“Winning Teams has helped me to discover that Mathematics is not as bad as I thought. The techniques they used were of great help – from the group activities, peer teaching and good tutoring. Today I am proud to say that I am a Bed student at North West University and I am majoring in Mathematics. Thanks to the foundation that was laid, this would not have been possible if Winning Teams was not there.” K Mokoena

My Story:

When I first failed matric in 2011 I had Winning Team’s Learner Booklets but never went through them, and failed Maths & Physical Sciences. I repeated in 2012 and used them but not that much, then I failed the very same subjects again. It’s like I never believed this thing that Maths & Physical Sciences were difficult for me, or anyone for that matter.

My Story – Godfery Lekgoara

A letter received from Godfery:

During the second term in 2012, while I was in Grade 12 in Bakwena Secondary school in Limpopo, I was introduced to the Winning Teams Programme for Mathematics and Physical Science. At that stage our attitudes towards Maths and Science was really bad.  We did not understand what we were being taught and we were bored with the teacher. We accepted that we were going to fail.
